Memorial Day Weekend in San Diego

Memorial Day Weekend in San Diego | Carlsbad by the Sea Hotel

Memorial Day Weekend marks the beginning of summer and is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful Southern California sunshine while honoring our military. This year’s activities might be smaller in scale than years in the past, but there are still plenty of things to do over the long weekend. Here are a few fun and safe activities and events happening this weekend  in and around North County:

Have a Beach BBQ

Memorial Day is the quintessential signal for the start of summer- so what better way to spend it than with a beach barbeque or picnic! Click here for a list of beaches equipped with fire pits, grills and picnic tables. The long weekend is sure to draw large crowds to the beach, so plan to arrive early to secure your spot.

Take Part in Legacy Week

The USS Midway Museum’s “Legacy Week” is the heart and soul of Memorial Day commemoration in San Diego. This year they are offering their most iconic activities onboard and in a virtual format. From a live stream Memorial Day commemoration, to an interactive Remembrance Wall, to our annual blood drive –  each element of Midway’s Legacy Week commemoration is designed to honor and remember our heroes. For more information and a full schedule of events, click here.

Take a Naval History Tour

After a temporary hiatus last year, the Maritime Museum’s popular naval history tour is coming back this Memorial Day weekend. The 75-minute tour takes visitors aboard their PCF 816 swift boat for a ride around the bay, and retired swift boat sailors will talk about their experiences as crewmen. Tickets are $15 and available here.

Go to a Concert

The San Diego Padres, in partnership with CBF Productions, are kicking off the summer with two back-to-back Memorial Day Weekend concerts at Petco Park. On May 29th, The Beach Boys will perform along with special guests John Stamos and Mark McGrath at 5:30pm. On Sunday, May 30, reggae star Ziggy Marley will play a special tribute concert to his father, Bob Marley, with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. Standard COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place, including mask requirements while not actively eating or drinking. Food and beverage offerings will be available with socially distanced, contactless and in-person ordering throughout the ballpark. Tickets for both shows start at $39 and are available here.

Set Sail on a Taste Adventure at SeaWorld

Explore more than 25 unique recipes from around the world and pair them with over 75 craft beers and over 25 cocktail and wine selections. Revitalize your taste buds as you share this welcoming, open-air experience all weekend (Friday-Monday). This event also includes acoustic guitar and jazz shows, and Polynesian dance presentations. Top it all off with a dazzling fireworks display on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. Per COVID-19 restrictions, out-of-state visitors will be required to show proof of a fully completed COVID-19 vaccine (you are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after your second shot, or two weeks after the one-dose vaccine).
